What we do

GET INVOLVED

Customised Ementoring

If you would like a customised ementoring website for your organisation or project, we can develop this for you. Ementoring could support your organisation‘s activities in a range of areas:

  • Widening participation
  • IAG (information, advice and guidance) provision
  • Student retention and support
  • It is an opportunity that many school pupils and university students are keen to take up because in terms of commitment level, it is easily fitted into a hectic A-level or degree level timetable, but the rewards are enormous
  • Pre-enrolment support and induction
  • Employability
  • Student volunteering
  • Alumni engagement
  • Corporate social responsibility and employee volunteering

Benefits for partners

  • You select the website name, design, URL and logo
  • You can use the website as a hub for all the mentoring activities across your organisation
  • Handbooks and materials will feature your branding
  • Users can access regularly updated news and articles via the existing resource library. This can be combined with a news feed from your own website to give the student relevant local news and guidance
  • Developing web content and coaching activities tailored to the needs of your students

We also provide ongoing support throughout the project to help ensure your scheme has an impact on your target groups. This includes:

  • Implementation guidance on setting scheme objectives and advising on roll out
  • A complete training package for mentors and mentees
  • Mentor and mentee handbooks
  • Training for a member of your staff
  • Delivery of your first mentor or mentee training session
  • Ongoing monitoring support of mentoring correspondence
  • Support in uploading mentors and mentees onto the website
  • Membership of a national ementoring network
  • Ongoing technical support via a designated Brightside member of staff for the scheme coordinator and all users

Case studies

Manchester Mentoring

The University of Manchester’s ementoring scheme matches young people at school with undergraduate mentors. These mentors give them guidance and advice on careers, study and university life. As well as a branded ementoring website, there is a comprehensive training programme for mentors, which gives them the skills to effectively build rapport and support their mentee.

We have taken advantage of the Brightside Trust’s pioneering ementoring software at the University of Manchester since its inception. They are the clear market leader in this product and share our vision for producing innovative, bespoke solutions that support young people in their increasingly complex educational and career journeys.
Julian Skyrme, Head of Undergraduate Recruitment and Widening Participation, University of Manchester

Ask BCU

Birmingham City University is using its Ask BCU ementoring scheme to help two student cohorts at two distinctive stages.

Stage 1 supports students who have been offered a place at BCU. These students are matched with an undergraduate mentor who can give them advice and support on all aspects of university life to prepare them for the transition to higher education.

Stage 2 supports BCU students in their penultimate and final years to prepare for employment. Business mentors, including BCU Alumni, will support their journey from university into employment by giving relevant advice and guidance.

Working with Brightside has given the Employment Zone Team at Birmingham City University the unique opportunity to support our students, increase their career aspirations, and to develop valuable links with mentors in business and members of our Alumni.

Talking Uni with HSBC

BrightsideUNIAID is working with HSBC Bank plc on Talking Uni, a project to help students from years 12 and 13 prepare for the transition to higher education and manage their finances.  HSBC staff volunteer their time to mentor participating students and support them as they think about university, options, applications and student finance.

At HSBC we really want young people to feel more comfortable and confident in understanding money and finance issues. That's why we support a range of community activities for young people from primary school age upwards. We also are passionate about using the skills and enthusiasm of our own people in helping us to deliver this support. Finding time to contribute to these activities can be difficult so I am very pleased to now be able to offer my colleagues an opportunity to get involved from their offices or homes as a mentor. In this way we hope that HSBC can help more young people develop a firm foundation in how to manage their money.
Peter Bull, Head of HSBC in the Community
