Physics Ementoring

Big Bang Blogs was launched in January 2007 to encourage young people from socially disadvantaged backgrounds to aspire to a career in physics.

During the last 15 years, the number of students taking A Level Physics has dropped by 33% so one of the scheme’s core goals was to increase take up.

Big Bang Blogs is part of the Stimulating Physics Network, a nationwide programme funded by the Department for Children, Schools and Families and run by the Institute of Physics.

Big Bang Blogs provides ementoring support to 14-19 year olds who receive advice and support from a mentor who is either a physics undergraduate student or a professional working in the area. Like all BrightsideUNIAID’s ementoring projects, mentees can access a wealth of online information on careers and university and a range of interactive online activities, which are linked to the PSHE curriculum and designed to help mentees develop life skills.

The evaluation of the three-year pilot showed that:

  • 92% of mentees were inspired by their mentor to think about going to university;
  • 96% would recommend Big Bang Blogs to a sibling or friend;
  • 90% agreed or strongly agreed that a physics degree offers many interesting career options;
  • 75% said that ementoring had increased their confidence to attend university.

In addition, the ementoring programme showed that mentees were more motivated to do their school work, had a good understanding of the options open to them once they left school and felt better prepared for the future.

Big Bang Blogs Case Study

X is a bright student in a Nottinghamshire school.  Prior to enrolling on Big Bang Blogs, he wasn’t engaging with his school work, was submitting homework late and not paying attention in class. His teacher considered him bright but not hardworking. After a three-month period of being supported by an enthusiastic mentor from Leicester University, X is now switched on to science and his other school studies. His teacher claims that he is a changed student as a result of focused ementoring. X’s marks have also improved.
